Both DNA and RNA have the same basic structure, in which units consisting of a nucleic acid base (usually simply abbreviated as base) and a pentose are linked in a one-dimensional manner via phosphate (Figure 1). A unit consisting of a base and a sugar is called a nucleoside, and a unit with a phosphate group attached to it is called a nucleotide. The chemical structural differences between DNA and RNA are as follows:
