Shodaisan

Japanese: 小岱山 - しょうだいさん

It is also written as Shodaiyama and pronounced "Shotaisan". It is a mountain in the northwest of Kumamoto Prefecture. It straddles the cities of Arao and Tamana and the town of Nankan. The mountain is divided into two peaks, Tsutsugatake (501m) and Kannondake (473m), which are made of granite. On the western foot of the mountain, there are ancient and medieval kiln and ironworks sites on the hills of the Paleogene layer with coal-bearing layers. Tsutsugatake in the north is where the Shodai clan, the land lord of Nohara Manor in the Middle Ages, built their mountain castle, and the mountain's name is derived from this. There is a good view of Mount Unzen and Mount Aso from the summit, and the area is part of a prefectural natural park and has hiking trails.

小代山とも書き，〈しょうたいさん〉ともよむ。熊本県北西部にある山。荒尾･玉名両市と南関（なんかん）町にまたがり，山上は花コウ岩質の筒ヶ岳(501m)と観音岳(473m)の2峰に分かれ，西麓に続く含炭層を伴う古第三紀層の丘陵地に，古代･中世の窯跡や製鉄跡がある。北部の筒ヶ岳は中世野原荘の地頭小代氏が山城を構えたところで，山名もこれにちなむ。山頂から雲仙岳や阿蘇山の眺望がよく，一帯は県立自然公園に属し，ハイキングコースとなっている。
