...Instructional books were published by Silvestro Ganassi (2 volumes, 1542, 1543) and Diego Ortiz (1553). In the second half of the 17th century, the treble and tenor instruments were completely replaced by the violin, but the bass vimbas continued to be used until the second half of the 18th century because of their wide range, unique tone, and other expressive power.
