The army was organized in a decimal system, and taxes were collected from the subordinate cities and territories by the dargatis and military basqaqs. Berke Khan (r. 1255-66), the first to accept Islam, built the New Sarai to the north of the Old Sarai as a commercial and industrial center, and diplomatically launched a century-long struggle with the Ilkhanate over the possession of the Transcaucasia, while at the same time establishing friendly relations with the Mamluks of Egypt. During the reign of the next emperor, Mangu Timur (1266-82), he intervened in the so-called Haidu Rebellion (1266-1304), fought between Kublai Khan and Haidu for the title of Great Khan, and the Kipchak Khanate gained the status of an independent state. It reached its zenith during the first half of the 14th century under the father-son dukes, Özbek (1312-42) and Janibek (1342-57). *Some of the terminology that mentions "Berke Khān" is listed below.
