[Kazuo Sekiyama]

First generation

(1768-1838) He started out as a student of Toutei Yakko under the name Tako. He followed the first Sanshotei Karaku under the name Toshotei Seraku. He then became independent under the name Sanyutei Ensho. He became a student of Uteienba under the name Tatekawa Ensho. He then became independent again under the name Sanyutei Ensho. He was the originator of "gestures, vocal expression, and musical instruments in theatrical performances." He was the founder of the Sanyu school. He wrote "The genealogy of Touto rakugo masters and disciples."

2nd Generation

(1806-62). His real name was Ogata Seijiro. He started out as Misuya Shigeji. He joined the first Ensho school and took the name Chikurintei Kosho. He went on to take the name San'yutei Kasho and Tachibanaya Enzo before becoming the second. He lived in Yotsuya and was nicknamed "Yotsumoku" for his mokugyo head. He created theatrical tales. Encho was one of his disciples.

3rd generation

(1839-81) His real name was Nomoto Shinbei. He started as a Kabuki actor and became the 4th Katsura Bunji school of Katsura Manji. He then moved to the Encho school and took on the name Enraku. In 1872 (Meiji 5), he took on the name of the 3rd. He was given props by Encho and performed "prop-filled tales." During his acting days, he went by the name "Noshin," so he was called "Noshin Ensho."

4th generation

(1846-1904) His real name was Tateiwa Katsujiro. He was a disciple of Encho. After passing through the names of Koichou, Koenta, and the third Enkyo, he took on the name of the fourth in 1886 (Meiji 19). He excelled in human interest stories and kuruwabanashi (red light district stories), and led the Sanyu school.

5th generation

(1884-1940) His real name was Murata Genji. He was a disciple of the 4th Tachibanaya Enzo. He went on to have the names Fumizo, Koenzo, Enso and the 5th Enzo before assuming the name of the 5th in 1925 (Taisho 14). He was known as "Fatty Ensho." He toured around America in 1915 (Taisho 4) and became a talking point. He displayed a bold yet detailed style of performance, and was a specialist in pieces such as "Sanjikkoku," "Kubijochin," "Bunshichimotoi," and "Futatsuchocho."

6th generation

(1900-79). His real name was Yamazaki Matsuo. He was the adopted son of the 5th. At the age of 6, he became a child Gidayu (gidayu) and Toyotake Mamekanatayu. At the age of 10, he switched to rakugo and became a disciple of the 4th Enzo. After working under the names of Endo, Koenzo, Enko, Enso, and the 6th Enzo, he took on the name of the 6th Enzo in 1941 (Showa 16). He boasted a wide range of artistic talent, including Encho stories such as "Shinkei Kasanegafuchi," "Botan Doro (ghost story of the peony lantern)," and "Chibusa enoki (ghost story of the encho tree)," as well as brothels, musical stories, and theatrical stories. He left behind many books and documents, including "Ensho Zenshu" and "Ensho Hyakuseki" (records). In June 1978, he formed the Rakugo Sanyu Association in opposition to the excessive production of shinuchi (shin'uchi) performers, but died suddenly while still active.

初代

(1768―1838)初め東亭八ッ子(とうていやっこ)門で多子(たこ)。初代三笑亭可楽(からく)に従って東生亭世楽(とうしょうていせらく)。独立して山遊亭猿松(えんしょう)。烏亭焉馬(うていえんば)門となり立川焉笑(たてかわえんしょう)。再度独立して三遊亭円生。「身振り声色(こわいろ)芝居掛り鳴物入り」の元祖。三遊派の祖。『東都噺者(とうとはなしか)師弟系図』を著す。

2代

(1806―62)本名尾形清次郎。初め三升屋(みますや)しげ次。初代円生門に入って竹林亭虎生(こしょう)。三遊亭花生(かしょう)、橘屋(たちばなや)円蔵を経て2代目襲名。四谷(よつや)に住み、木魚頭(もくぎょあたま)のため「よつもく」といわれる。芝居噺を創作。門下から円朝(えんちょう)が出た。

3代

(1839―81)本名野本新兵衛。歌舞伎(かぶき)役者から4代桂(かつら)文治門となり桂万治。円朝門に移って円楽。1872年(明治5)3代目襲名。円朝から道具を譲られて「道具入り芝居噺」を演じた。役者時代に「のしん」を名のったので「のしん円生」とよばれた。

(1846―1904)本名立岩勝次郎。円朝門下。鯉朝、小円太、3代円喬(えんきょう)を経て1886年(明治19)4代目襲名。人情噺、廓噺(くるわばなし)に優れ、三遊派を統率。

(1884―1940)本名村田源治。4代橘家円蔵門下。二三蔵(ふみぞう)、小円蔵、円窓、5代円蔵を経て1925年(大正14)5代目襲名。「でぶの円生」といわれる。1915年(大正4)にアメリカ各地を巡業して話題になる。豪放のなかにも細緻(さいち)な芸を示し、『三十石(さんじっこく)』『首提灯(くびぢょうちん)』『文七元結(ぶんしちもっとい)』『双蝶々(ふたつちょうちょう)』などを得意とした。

6代

(1900―79)本名山崎松尾。5代目の養子。6歳で子供義太夫(ぎだゆう)・豊竹(とよたけ)豆仮名太夫。10歳で落語に転じ4代円蔵門下。円童、小円蔵、円好、円窓、6代円蔵を経て1941年(昭和16)6代目襲名。円朝ものの『真景累ヶ淵(かさねがふち)』『怪談牡丹灯籠(ぼたんどうろう)』『怪談乳房榎(ちぶさえのき)』をはじめ廓噺、音曲噺、芝居噺など広い芸域を誇り、『円生全集』『円生百席』(レコード)など多くの著作・資料を残す。78年6月に真打(しんうち)乱造に反対して落語三遊協会を結成、活躍中に急逝。
