1043?-99 Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar was a hero of the medieval Kingdom of Castile in the Iberian Peninsula. His real name was Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar. His nickname Cid comes from the Arabic word meaning "master." Born into an aristocratic family, Rodrigo entered the royal court at an early age and grew up under Prince Sancho. When the prince ascended to the throne as Sancho II in 1065, Rodrigo was appointed commander-in-chief of the Castilian army. However, when Sancho II was assassinated and his brother Alfonso VI succeeded to the throne (1072), Rodrigo's fate changed dramatically.
