Shimonita [town] - Shimonita

Japanese: 下仁田[町] - しもにた

A town in Kanra County in southwest Gunma Prefecture. It occupies the southern foot of Mt. Myogi. The city center has long developed as a market town, and is famous as a distribution center for konjac and green onions. It is the terminus of the Joshin Electric Railway, and serves as a base for tourists visiting Kozu Farm, Mt. Myogi, and Mt. Arafune. The Joshinetsu Expressway passes through the town. Shiitake mushrooms are also produced here. Area: 188.38 ^km2 . Population: 8,911 (2010).

群馬県南西部，甘楽(かんら)郡の町。妙義山南麓を占める。中心市街は古くから市場町として発達し，コンニャク，ネギの集散地として有名。上信電鉄の終点にあたり，神津(こうづ)牧場，妙義山，荒船山の観光基地となっている。上信越自動車道が通じる。シイタケも産する。188.38km²。8911人（2010）。
