A town in Kanra County in southwest Gunma Prefecture. It occupies the southern foot of Mt. Myogi. The city center has long developed as a market town, and is famous as a distribution center for konjac and green onions. It is the terminus of the Joshin Electric Railway, and serves as a base for tourists visiting Kozu Farm, Mt. Myogi, and Mt. Arafune. The Joshinetsu Expressway passes through the town. 群馬県南西部,甘楽(かんら)郡の町。妙義山南麓を占める。中心市街は古くから市場町として発達し,コンニャク,ネギの集散地として有名。上信電鉄の終点にあたり,神津(こうづ)牧場,妙義山,荒船山の観光基地となっている。上信越自動車道が通じる。シイタケも産する。188.38km2。8911人(2010)。
