The 17th king of Goguryeo, Korea. Reigned 371-384. He succeeded his father, King Won, after his death in a battle with Baekje. While he was in conflict with Baekje, he also had frequent relations with Former Qin, and in 372 he received the monk Shundo, Buddhist scriptures, and a Buddhist statue from Former Qin King Fu Jian. This marks the beginning of the introduction of Buddhism to the Korean peninsula. In the same year, he also built the Taigak School and established Confucian education, and the following year he is said to have promulgated the Ritsuryo Code. He also built the Shomunsa Temple for Shundo, contributing to the rise of Buddhism. [Hamada Kosaku]

朝鮮，高句麗の第17代の王。在位371‐384年。父王の故国原王が百済と戦って薨（こう）ずるや後をついで即位。以来百済と対立する一方では，前秦によく通交し，372年には前秦王の苻堅より僧の順道と仏典･仏像を送られた。朝鮮半島への仏教伝来の初めとされる。また同年，太学を建て儒学教育を興し，翌年には律令を頒布したという。また順道のために肖門寺を建立して仏教の興隆に尽くした。【浜田耕策】
