?‐384 The 17th king of Goguryeo, Korea. Reigned 371-384. He succeeded his father, King Won, after his death in a battle with Baekje. While he was in conflict with Baekje, he also had frequent relations with Former Qin, and in 372 he received the monk Shundo, Buddhist scriptures, and a Buddhist statue from Former Qin King Fu Jian. This marks the beginning of the introduction of Buddhism to the Korean peninsula. In the same year, he also built the Taigak School and established Confucian education, and the following year he is said to have promulgated the Ritsuryo Code. He also built the Shomunsa Temple for Shundo, contributing to the rise of Buddhism. [Hamada Kosaku] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
