Born: August 19, 1901, Latronche, Isère
[Died] May 23, 1970. Suresnes, Seine. French lawyer and politician. Son of H. Capitan. Professor at the University of Strasbourg in 1929. Early on he warned of the dangers of the Nazism movement, and in 1937 he organized the Committee to Monitor Anti-Fascist Intellectuals. Later he joined the Resistance. From 1944 to November 1945 he was Minister of Education in General de Gaulle's Provisional Government. Thereafter he was active as a leftist of de Gaulle. Professor at the University of Paris in 1951. In 1957 he came to Japan as Director of the Maison Franco-Japonais, and returned to Japan in 1960. He returned to politics in 1962, and in June 1968 he became Minister of Justice in the Pompidou Cabinet, resigning in April 1969.

[Died] September 21, 1937. Aragnet French legal scholar. Professor at the University of Paris. Came to Japan in 1931. His major works include Introduction to the Study of Civil Law (1929), which is regarded as the most fundamental textbook on French civil law, and Cours de droit civil (29, co-authored with A. Collin).
