A term used by the subjugated classes in early modern Japan to refer to a household head who did not own his or her own house, but rented a house owned by someone else and used it for the benefit of his or her residence. A synonym is rented house (kashiya or shayakuya), which is considered to be roughly synonymous, but originally, renting a house meant renting the entire house, and renting a shop meant renting only a portion of the house. Like land renting, renting a house or shop was not originally a specific status or class in itself, but a temporary position or state in which the subjugated classes such as farmers, townspeople, and craftsmen found themselves.
