A diagram showing the structure of an organization so that the organization's departments, the interrelationships between job titles, the division of responsibilities and authority, and the chain of command can be seen at a glance. It is common for only the names of departments and agencies to be listed and the structure shown (organizational diagrams), but there are also diagrams that show the chain of command between job titles (chain of command diagrams) and diagrams that describe the tasks divided among each department. In Japanese companies, rules on division of duties and other matters are often vague, leaving a lot of room for individual discretion, so the actual state of the organization often deviates from the organizational chart.

組織の部門の編成，職位の相互関係や責任と権限の分担の系列，指揮，命令の系統などが一目でわかるように組織の構造を図で示したもの。部門や機関の名称だけを記し，単に機構だけを示すものが一般的であるが (機構図) ，職位と職位との間の指揮，命令系統を示すもの (指揮，命令系統図) や，各部門で分業する業務の内容などを記載したものもある。日本の企業は分掌などの規程があいまいなことが多く個々の裁量の余地が大きいため，組織の実態が組織図から乖離していることが多い。
