Indonesian writer. Born in Central Java. He participated in the war for independence and was captured by the Dutch army. He began writing during his imprisonment from 1947 to 1949. He published works such as "The Story of Vulora" (1952) and "Not Like a Night Market" (1951), which deal with the nature and scenery of his hometown, conflict with his father and the breakdown of his family, as well as "A Guerrilla Family" and "Dawn" (both 1950), which depict the glory and misery of the independence revolution, and established his position as a writer representing the 1945 generation. After a visit to China in 1956, he leaned towards socialism and became the theoretical center of the Indonesian Communist Party's cultural movement.
