…In 1970, there were more than 1,600 companies in the Swiss watch industry, ranging from home-based assembly plants to relatively modern integrated manufacturers. However, there was a demand to improve the old, conservative structure of the Swiss watch industry and to modernize and streamline the companies, and drastic restructuring was carried out under the initiative of banks. The largest of these was the merger of ASUAG (Swiss General Watch Corporation) and SSIH (Swiss Watch Corporation), the two largest watch groups in Switzerland. Both groups had been in poor performance for some time, and the cumulative deficit before the merger was said to be 357 million francs (approximately 43 billion yen in Japanese yen). …
