...The musical culture of Dalmatia, a region facing the Adriatic Sea, and of Slovenia and Croatia, which border Austria and Hungary, was influenced from an early stage by Italian Renaissance and Baroque music, as well as the Viennese Classical School. The center of musical activity in the 18th century was the Dalmatian city of Dubrovnik on the Adriatic Sea, where composers such as Luka Sorkočević (1734-89) and Julije Bajamonti (1744-1800) were active, but in the 19th century the center of activity shifted to the Croatian capital, Zagreb, where composers such as Vatroslav Lisinski (1819-54), Ivan Zajc (1832-1914), and Davorin Jenko (1835-1914) wrote nationalist operas and patriotic choral pieces inspired by the spirit of Slavic nationalism and the desire for national independence against the rule of the Habsburg Empire. On the other hand, Western music began to be introduced to the southeastern regions of Serbia and Macedonia, which had long been under Turkish rule, after they gained independence from Turkey in 1830. Kornelije Stanković (1831-65) and Stevan Mokranjac (1856-1914) contributed to the establishment of modern Serbian music through many compositions that made use of the traditions of church music in the Serbian Orthodox Church. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Lisinski, V." are listed below.
