Japanese: 特高 - とっこう

The political police under Japan's old police system. Abbreviation for Tokko Police. Also abbreviated as Tokko Police. In the wake of the High Treason Incident, the Tokko Police Department was established in the Metropolitan Police Department in 1911 (promoted to a department in 1932), and in 1928 in each prefecture. Under the direct control of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and based on the Peace Preservation Law and other laws, it suppressed liberal, socialist, and communist movements as the main force of the police state. It was abolished in 1945.

日本の旧警察制度下における政治警察。特別高等警察の略称。特高警察とも略称された。大逆事件を機に，1911年警視庁に特別高等課（1932年部に昇格）が置かれ，1928年各県にも設置。内務省直轄下に治安維持法などに基づき，警察国家の主体として自由主義・社会主義・共産主義運動を弾圧。1945年廃止。
