Shrine of the dead - Shokonsha
〘Noun〙 The former name of Yasukuni Shrine and Gokoku Shrine. It is the renamed name of the various local Shokonsha shrines that were used to enshrine the souls of those who died for their country from the end of the Edo period to around the time of the Meiji Restoration. In 1868 , the souls of those who died were enshrined in Higashiyama, Kyoto, and in June of the following year, a temporary shrine was built on Kudanzaka in Tokyo and renamed Tokyo Shokonsha, and in 1879 it was renamed Yasukuni Shrine. The local ones were renamed Gokoku Shrine in March 1939. *Newspaper magazine - Issue 3, June 1871 (Meiji 4) "Strange and unusual items exhibited at Tokyo Shokonsha Shrine"

〘名〙 靖国神社および護国神社の旧称。江戸末期から明治維新前後にかけて、国事に殉難した人士の霊魂をまつった各地の招魂場を改称したもの。明治元年(一八六八)に京都の東山に殉難の諸士を合祀したのを、翌年六月、東京九段坂上に仮神殿を造建して東京招魂社と改称し、同一二年になって靖国神社と改称。また、地方のものは、昭和一四年(一九三九)三月、護国神社と改称。※新聞雑誌‐三号・明治四年(1871)六月「東京招魂社内にて展覧せし物産会奇物異品等」
