〘名〙① 上・下の二層になっているもの。※御堂関白記‐寛弘八年(1011)七月一七日「二階櫛筥・硯筥・火取等奉之」② 室内用の調度のひとつで、二層の棚を設け、日用品などを置くもの。棚の二段ある厨子。また、とびらのあるのを「厨子」、とびらのないのを「二階」と区別して呼ぶこともある。※蜻蛉(974頃)上「と書きつけて、にかいの中に置きたり」③ 平屋の上にさらに一層重ねて造った家屋、または、その上層の部屋。また、三層以上ある建築物で、下から二層目の階。※吾妻鏡‐文治二年(1186)五月二五日「入或民家二階之上」④ (━する) 二つの段階。転じて、位をひとつ跳び越えて昇進すること。※平家(13C前)一一「越階とて二階をするこそありがたき朝恩なるに、是はすでに三階なり」⑤ 近世、特殊な建物で③の構造になっているもの。(イ) 湯女(ゆな)風呂の場合。二階が浴客の遊び場になっている。※浮世草子・好色盛衰記(1688)五「姉が小路の和泉風呂へ入相の比より行て〈略〉二階(カイ)にあかれば」(ロ) 楽屋の場合。実際は三階で、座頭はじめ立役その他のいる所。※談義本・根無草(1763‐69)後「迎の提灯烈欠(いなづま)を欺き、二階(ニカイ)のさはぎは雷の落るかと疑ふ」(ハ) 遊女屋の場合。そこに部屋を持っている遊女をもいう。※雑俳・川柳評万句合‐宝暦一二(1762)梅三「二階からまねくとはうそしがみ付き」
