…The English word melodrama is a borrowing from the French mélodrame, and is said to have first been used by JJ Rousseau in his Pygmalion (1775) to describe a type of play in which the characters' entrances and exits are accompanied by musical accompaniment (note that melo- can be traced back to melos, the Greek word for song). In other words, the word originally referred to the form of a play that includes music, rather than its content.
