…The English word melodrama is a borrowing from the French mélodrame, and is said to have first been used by JJ Rousseau in his Pygmalion (1775) to describe a type of play in which the characters' entrances and exits are accompanied by musical accompaniment (note that melo- can be traced back to melos, the Greek word for song). In other words, the word originally referred to the form of a play that includes music, rather than its content. However, as we will see below, over the course of time, the meaning of the word has gradually come to be determined by the content of the play, rather than the form. …
