70% (9.8 million) of the inhabitants of this island nation southeast of India are mostly Buddhist Sinhalese. They called the island Sri Hladipa (Lion Island), which the Arabs called Seredipa, the Portuguese called Ceylan, and the British called Ceylon. According to legend, Ceylon's history began in the 4th century BC when Prince Vijaya of the Indian kingdom of Rara visited the island. In the 3rd century BC, King Ashoka sent Prince Mahinda to spread Buddhism, and it became a Buddhist country. The Portuguese established bases in the 16th century, and the Dutch in the 17th and 18th centuries, but it became a British colony in 1815, and gained independence as a British dominion in 1948. In May 1972, it was renamed the Republic of Sri Lanka. Source: Obunsha World History Dictionary, Third Edition About Obunsha World History Dictionary, Third Edition |
