Ami (shrimp) - Ami

Japanese: アミ(醬蝦) - アミ
Ami (shrimp) - Ami
A general term for the family Mysidae and related species in the superorder Peracaridae of the class Crustacea. Not only are they important as natural food for fish, but those from brackish and freshwater are caught and eaten as tsukudani, as well as used as bait for catching sardines and horse mackerel, and as feed for farmed fish and poultry. Body length is about 0.5 to 2 cm. Their shape is similar to shrimp and krill (both in the superorder Pampascaridae of the class Crustacea), but their morphological characteristics are different. In mysids, the carapace covers most of the thorax, but is separated from the thorax behind the fourth thoracic segment.
