Japanese: アンゼリカ - あんぜりか（英語表記）angelica

A perennial plant of the Umbelliferae family (APG classification: Umbelliferae) that is said to be native to the Alps region of Europe. The stem is 1 to 2 meters tall, branches at the top, and in summer, many small green-white flowers bloom in an umbrella-like cluster. The leaves are similar to celery, with thick petioles and grow to about 50 centimeters in length.

In medieval Europe, it was known as a witch's herb due to its strong fragrance. Dried angelica roots, stems, leaves, and seeds are used as stomach medicines, carminatives (medicines that expel gas from the intestines), and stimulants. Essential oil extracted from the roots is used as a flavoring for liqueurs such as gin and benedictine, and the stems and petioles are used to color and flavor Western sweets and cakes. It is also in the same genus as angelica, and young leaves are edible and dried leaves are used in herbal tea.

ヨーロッパのアルプス地方原産とされるセリ科（APG分類：セリ科）の多年草。茎は高さ1～2メートル、上が枝分れして夏に緑白色の小花が多数傘のように集まって開く。葉はセロリに似て葉柄が太く、長さ50センチメートルほどになる。

利用

中世ヨーロッパでは、その強い香りから魔女の霊草として知られていた。干したアンゼリカの根や茎、葉、種子は胃薬、駆風(くふう)剤（腸管内にたまったガスを排出する薬剤）、興奮剤に利用される。また根から抽出した精油はジンやベネディクティンなどのリキュール類の香料に使われ、茎や葉柄は洋菓子やケーキ類の色づけ、香りづけに用いられる。またアシタバと同属で、若葉が食用にされ、乾燥葉はハーブ・ティーに用いられる。
