Anselm von Havelberg

He was a medieval German clergyman born in Lütig (now Liège, Belgium) and studied at the cathedral of Laon, where he met Norbertus of Xanten, later Archbishop of Magdeburg, and was appointed Bishop of Havelberg in 1129. He was active in a wide range of political and theological matters, including as a papal legate in the Wendish Crusade against the Wends in 47, as a diplomatic envoy for the Holy Roman Emperors Lothair III through Frederick I, and visited Constantinople three times, representing the imperial side in the Peace of Constance between Frederick I and the League of Lombard Cities.

中世ドイツの聖職者。リューティヒ(現，ベルギー領リエージュ)地方に生まれ，ラン司教座聖堂で学び，そこで後のマクデブルク大司教クサンテンのノルベルトゥスNorbertusと知り合い，1129年ハーフェルベルクの司教に任じられたが，その政治･神学上の活動は広範であった。47年対ウェンド人十字軍の教皇特使となり，またロタール3世からフリードリヒ1世までの神聖ローマ皇帝の外交使節を務め，3度もコンスタンティノープルを訪れ，ロンバルディア都市同盟とフリードリヒ1世とのコンスタンツの和議では皇帝側の代表となった。
