A city on the Murray River in northeastern Victoria, Australia, which forms the border with New South Wales. Along with Albury on the opposite bank, it is located at the point where the rail and road between Sydney and Melbourne cross the Murray River, and the two cities are essentially a combined city (population 40,210 (1988 estimate)). In addition to distributing and processing agricultural and livestock products, it is an industrial base with an increasing number of factories. Population 25,800 (1989 estimate).
