A type of marriage in which, when a man dies without leaving behind a male heir or a wife to give birth to one, his brothers or close relatives take wives in the name of the deceased. This is well known among the pastoral Nuer people of West Africa and South Sudan, but is also seen in Asia. The social father of a child born from this marriage is considered to be the ghost of the deceased, and has the rights and obligations of the child of the deceased.
