Lezgins - Lezgins (English spelling)

Japanese: レズギン族 - レズギンぞく（英語表記）Lezgini

An ethnic group living in the eastern Caucasus region of the Russian Federation, the Republic of Dagestan, and the northern Republic of Azerbaijan. They are also spelled Lezki. Population: 466,000 (1989). They speak Lezgin, a language belonging to the Dagestani branch of the Caucasian languages. In the past, several ethnic groups in southern Dagestan were collectively referred to as Lezgins. The famous male dance Lezginka is not unique to this ethnic group. Christianity was widespread in the ancient and medieval periods, but Islamization (Sunni sect) progressed in the late Middle Ages. In the 18th century, they regularly plundered eastern Georgia and northern Azerbaijan, leaving the Iranian government at a loss as to what to do, and Georgian literature from that time is full of resentment toward them.
