Newt - Newt

An animal of the family Salamandridae in the class Amphibians. A primitive newt that inhabits Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima, Okinawa Island, and Tokashiki Island. It is about 20 centimeters long. Its head is slightly flattened and triangular, its torso is also slightly flattened, and the tips of its ribs protrude from its sides as wart-like protrusions, hence its name. Both its back and belly are black, and the tips of its fingers and the ridges on its sides are orange-red. It lives in relatively dry places, feeding on woodlouses and beetles, and lays eggs on land near water between March and June. The eggs are individually wrapped in a jelly membrane, and soil particles are attached to the surface, making them hard to see. It lays around 60 eggs, and the hatched larvae wriggle their bodies into the water and live there. Five species of this genus are known, found in the mountains from the Himalayas to southern China.

両生綱有尾目イモリ科の動物。原始的なイモリで、奄美(あまみ)大島や徳之島、沖縄本島、渡嘉敷(とかしき)島に生息する。全長約20センチメートル。頭部はやや扁平(へんぺい)で三角形、胴部もやや扁平で体側には肋骨(ろっこつ)の先端にあたる部分がいぼ状の突起として張り出しているため、この名がある。背面、腹面とも黒色で、指端や体側の隆起の先端は橙赤(とうせき)色。比較的乾燥した場所でワラジムシや甲虫類などを食べて生活し、3～6月に水辺の陸上で産卵する。卵は1個ずつ分離したゼリー膜に包まれ、表面に土粒が付着して目だたない。産卵数は60個内外で、孵化(ふか)した幼生は体をくねらせて水に入り、水中で幼生生活をする。この属には、ヒマラヤから中国南部の山地にかけて5種が知られている。
