A collection of essays written by Shiba Kokan, known as a Dutch scholar and Western-style painter in the late Edo period. Published in 1811 (Bunka 8). 1 volume. It contains the author's impressions of the social customs of the late Edo period as seen through his eyes, as well as his views on humanity, life and death, and scholarship, making it a valuable resource for glimpsing the social conditions of the time. The approximately 200 entries are filled with the author's sharp criticism of the social conditions, and it is interesting to see perspectives that are relevant to modern times. 江戸後期の蘭学者，洋画家として知られる司馬江漢が著した随筆集。1811年(文化8)成立。1巻。著者の目に映じた江戸時代末期の社会風俗についての所感や，人間観，死生観，学問観を記したもので，当時の世相をうかがううえでも貴重な資料である。約200項目の全体に著者の鋭い世相批判があふれ，近代に通じる観点がみられるのが興味深い。《日本経済叢書》《日本随筆大成》所収。【桂島宣弘】
