Canzone - Canzone (English spelling) Italian

Japanese: カンツォーネ - かんつぉーね（英語表記）canzone イタリア語

In Italian, it means "song" or "pop song", but in Japan it is usually used to refer to Italian popular songs, not including pure classical music. Among them are folk songs that have been passed down in various regions since ancient times, and also works by popular professional composers. There is a wide variety of songs, from lyric songs to those influenced by jazz and rock, but overall, the first characteristic is that the melodies are bright and beautiful, making them easy for anyone to sing. The content is also relatively simple, and many of them are love songs with straightforward expressions. The structure of the songs usually progresses regularly, such as 2 bars, 4 bars, and 8 bars, and each verse is repeated with a ritornello to liven up the melody and create a highlight. In contrast, the "narrative" part at the beginning of the song is called strofa.

Canzone Napolitana

Among the canzones, the one that became known to the world from the earliest times was the canzone Napolitana, or Napolitana for short. As its name suggests, it developed in the port city of Naples, and has unique characteristics that set it apart from other canzones. In other words, the lyrics are written in the Neapolitan dialect, and the melodies and intonations show the influence of exotic foreign music.

The oldest surviving Napolitana is said to be the song "The Sun Rises" from the early 12th century. Its hotbed was the Piedigrotta Song Festival, which began in the mid-15th century. Originally, it was a festival in which Neapolitan fishermen offered songs and dances to the statue of the Virgin Mary, praying and giving thanks for a good catch and safety at sea. It eventually became a city-wide music festival, and after the unification of Italy in 1860, it became even more lively as Naples prospered as a commercial center. Then, in 1891, a contest format was institutionalized in which a jury judged submitted new songs to determine the winner, and famous songs such as "O Sole Mio" (1898) and "Go Back to Sorrento" (1902) were released to the world.

Later, in the 1930s, as Naples lost its dominance to Milan in northern Italy and went into decline, Napolitana also fell into decline, but in 1952 the Naples Music Festival was launched in order to preserve the tradition of the song festival.

After World War II

After the Second World War, the Sanremo Music Festival, which began in 1951, took the lead in the canzone world. The original purpose was to attract tourists during the off-season, but Domenico Modugno's works "Volare" in 1958 and "Ciao Ciao Bambina" in 1959 won the first place two years in a row, and the great success of these works made the city of Sanremo known all over the world, and the whole canzone genre acquired an international style. A new type of cantautore (composer-singer, so-called singer-songwriter) such as Modugno emerged, and rock-style canzone singers such as Mina also appeared. Thus, in the first half of the 1960s, popular singers such as Milva and Gigliola Cinquetti (1947-) appeared, and canzone became very popular in Japan, entering its golden age.

On the other hand, stimulated by the great success of the Beatles, groups were formed one after another, and from around 1966, a boom in group sounds began. However, cantautore that were too difficult to understand and groups that became too avant-garde ended up alienating the masses, and it cannot be denied that the 1970s saw a slight decline. After that, soft, familiar songs that respected the original flavor of canzone became popular again.

Various music festivals

Reflecting the festival-loving national character of Italy, many music festivals are held in addition to the Naples Music Festival and the San Remo Music Festival. For example, the "Zecchino d'Oro" music festival for children, which has been held in Bologna since 1959, has produced hits such as "Black Cat Tango". The "Summer Disc Festival" is a contest aimed at increasing record sales during the vacation season, and the "Festival Bar" is also a contest in which participants put their songs into jukeboxes in summer resorts and compete for the number of times they can be played, with the top singers gathering for a final contest. Both began in 1964. Furthermore, the Venice Music Festival started in 1965. The "Canzonissima" also started on radio in 1956, moved to television in 1958, and changed its format every year, even adopting Totocalcio at one point to boost its popularity. Including these, it is said that around 1965, when music festivals reached their peak, 119 contests were held throughout Italy. It is no exaggeration to say that canzone developed through music festivals.

However, since the 1970s, the economic downturn has made it difficult to run music festivals, and their prestige has declined, with some singers refusing to participate. Music festivals have disappeared one by one, but the San Remo Music Festival, the Naples Music Festival, and the Festival Bar have continued into the 21st century, protecting the stronghold of canzone.

イタリア語で「歌」「歌謡」という意味であるが、日本では普通、純クラシック曲を含まず、イタリアのポピュラー・ソングをさすことばとして用いられる。そのなかには、古くから各地に伝わる民謡もあり、プロの人気作曲家による作品もある。リリック（叙情的）な歌曲から、ジャズやロックの影響を受けたものまで多種多様であるが、全体的にみて第一の特色は、メロディが明るく美しく、だれにでも歌いやすいことである。内容も比較的単純で、率直な表現による恋の歌が多い。曲の構成は、たいてい2小節、4小節、8小節というように、規則正しく進行し、1番ごとにリトルネッロritornelloという繰り返しがついて曲調を盛り上げ、聞かせどころを形づくる。これに対して、曲の始めの「語り」にあたる部分をストロファstrofaという。

カンツォーネ・ナポリターナ

カンツォーネのなかでも早くから世界に知られていたのはカンツォーネ・ナポリターナ、略してナポリターナである。これはその名のとおり港町ナポリに発達したもので、ほかのカンツォーネとは違った独特の特徴をもっている。すなわち、歌詞はナポリ方言で書かれ、メロディや節回しにもエキゾチックな外来音楽の影響がうかがえる。

　現存する最古のナポリターナは、12世紀初頭の『太陽がのぼる』という歌であるといわれる。その温床となったのは、15世紀の中ごろから始まったピエディグロッタの歌祭りであった。もともとはナポリの漁師たちが聖母像に歌や踊りを奉納して、大漁や海上安全を祈り、感謝を捧(ささ)げる祭礼であったが、やがて全市をあげての音楽祭となり、1860年のイタリア統一後は、ナポリが商業の中心地として栄えるとともに一段と活気を呈した。そして、1891年から、出品された新曲を審査員が審査して優勝を決めるコンテスト形式が制度化され、『オ・ソレ・ミオ』（1898）、『帰れソレントへ』（1902）などの名歌が世に送り出された。

　下って1930年代、北イタリアのミラノに主導権を奪われてナポリが斜陽化するにつれ、ナポリターナも衰微したが、歌祭りの伝統を守るべく、52年からナポリ音楽祭が発足した。

第二次世界大戦後

第二次世界大戦後カンツォーネ界のリーダーシップをとったのは、1951年に始まったサン・レモ音楽祭である。当初の目的はシーズンオフの観光客誘致であったが、58年に『ボラーレ』、59年に『チャオ・チャオ・バンビーナ』というドメニコ・モドゥーニョの作品が2年連続して優勝、その大ヒットによって、サン・レモ市の名は全世界に知られ、カンツォーネ全体がインターナショナルなスタイルを身につける。モドゥーニョをはじめ新しいタイプのカンタウトーレcantautore（作曲家兼歌手、いわゆるシンガー・ソングライター）が輩出し、ミーナらロック調のカンツォーネ歌手も登場した。こうして、60年代の前半、ミルバ、チンクェッティGigliola Cinquetti（1947―　）らの人気歌手も現れて、カンツォーネは日本でも大いに流行し、黄金時代を迎える。

　一方、ビートルズの大成功に刺激されて、グループが次々に結成され、1966年ごろからグループ・サウンズのブームがおこった。しかし、あまりに難解なカンタウトーレや、前衛的になりすぎたグループはかえって大衆から遊離してしまい、70年代はいささか低迷の観があったことは否めない。その後は、カンツォーネ本来の味わいを尊重した、ソフトな親しみやすい歌が、ふたたび好まれるようになってきた。

さまざまな音楽祭

祭り好きの国民性を反映して、イタリアではナポリ音楽祭、サン・レモ音楽祭のほかにも数多くの音楽祭が行われる。たとえば、1959年からボローニャで開かれている「ゼッキーノ・ドロ」は子供のための音楽祭で、『黒猫のタンゴ』などのヒットを生んだ。「夏のディスク・フェスティバル」は、バカンス・シーズンのレコード・セールスを目的としたコンテスト、「フェスティバルバール」も、同じく夏の避暑地のジューク・ボックスに参加曲を入れて、かかった回数を競い、上位歌手を集めて決選大会を開くという趣向で、いずれも64年から始まった。さらに、65年にはベネチア音楽祭がスタート。また「カンツォニッシマ」は1956年にラジオで開始、58年にテレビに移して、毎年方法を変え、一時はトトカルチョを採用して人気をあおった。これらを含め、音楽祭がピークに達した65年前後には、イタリア全土で119のコンテストが行われていたという。カンツォーネは音楽祭によって発展したといっても過言ではない。

　しかし、1970年代以降、経済の悪化に伴って音楽祭の運営が困難となり、その権威も低下して、出場を拒否する歌手も現れた。音楽祭も次々に消滅したが、サン・レモ音楽祭、ナポリ音楽祭、フェスティバルバールなどは、21世紀に入っても継続され、カンツォーネの牙城(がじょう)を守っている。
