Born: April 14, 1893 in Lengnau
[Died] 9 April 1968, Zurich?
Swiss art and architectural historian. After studying engineering, he studied art history under H. Wölfflin at the University of Munich, receiving his doctorate in Spatbarocker und romantischer Klassizismus (1922). He served as secretary-general of the International Congress of Modern Architecture (CIAM) from its founding in 1928, and engaged in practical activities for the development of modern architecture and the improvement of the human environment. His book Space, Time and Architecture (1941), based on lectures he gave at Harvard University in 1938, caused a great sensation, and he stayed in the United States from 1941 to 1945 and wrote its companion volume, Mechanization Takes Command (1948). He later served as professor at universities in both Switzerland and the United States, and wrote the magnum opus The Eternal Present (Part 1: The Beginnings of Art, 1962; Part 2: The Beginnings of Architecture, 1964), based on a lecture he gave at the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1957.
