...The original name was Sanso-do (so means to go around), and Eisa-do is a popular name derived from the shape of the tour route. The existing Entsu Sanso-do (1796) of the former Shoshu-ji Temple in Aizu-Wakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, has a hexagonal plan and three stories, with ramps for ascending and descending, along which the Kannon statues of the Thirty-Three Temples of the Western Provinces are placed. The Kannon Hall of Chozen-ji Temple (1763) in Toride City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and the Hyaku Kannon Hall of Sogen-ji Temple (1793) in Ota City, Gunma Prefecture, have a square plan and two stories on the outside, but the inside is three stories, and visitors can tour the Kannon statues along a clockwise path. ...

…本来の名称は三匝堂（さんそうどう）(匝は巡るの意味)で，栄螺堂は巡路の形状に由来する俗称である。現存する福島県会津若松市の旧正宗寺の円通三匝堂(1796)は，六角平面で3層の堂内に昇降のスロープを設け，それにそって西国三十三所の観音像を安置する。茨城県取手市の長禅寺観音堂(1763)や群馬県太田市の曹源寺百観音堂(1793)は，方形平面で外観は2層であるが，内部を3層につくり，右回りの通路にそって観音像を巡拝できるようになっている。…
