Shijo family

Japanese: 四条家 - しじょうけ
Shijo family

Descendants of the Uona lineage of the Northern House of the Fujiwara clan. They developed in conjunction with the Insei system at the end of the Heian period. Takasue in particular was highly valued by the retired Emperor Goshirakawa, and rose to the rank of Gon Dainagon, establishing his family status. The mansion he built in Shijo Omiya, Kyoto, was passed down to his descendants, and the family name was Shijo from the time of his grandson Takahira. From this family branched off the Yamashina, Nishioji, Washio, Kushige, and other families. They were known as a family of knives, and their cooking style was called the Shijo style. During the Nanboku-cho period, Takasuke, a member of the family, made a name for himself by serving the Southern Court. During the Edo period, his stipend was 180 koku. During the late Edo period, Takauta participated in the movement to pro-imperialize and overthrow the shogunate, and contributed greatly to the Meiji Restoration. When the peerage system was established in 1884 (Meiji 17), his family became counts, but just before his death in 1898, they were promoted to marquis for their achievements.
