[Died] 923/932. Rhazes. Persian-born Arabian physician, philosopher, and alchemist. Arabic name: Abū-Bakr Muhạmmad ibn Zakariyā al-Rāzī. Latin name: Rhazes. He studied linguistics, mathematics, philosophy, and music, and decided to study medicine at the age of 30. He became the director of Baghdad Hospital and also served as the royal physician. He followed Galen in both medical theory and practice, and taught, "If food cures, do not use medicines. If simple medicines are effective, do not use compound medicines." His main work, Al-Ḥāwī (Compendium of Medicine), includes a comprehensive coverage of medical knowledge from Greece, Syria, Arabia, and India, and also describes Rhazes' own clinical experience. In Kitāb fi-l-judarī wa al-ḥaṣbah (Considerations on Smallpox and Measles), he clearly distinguishes between the two diseases.

ペルシア生まれのアラビア医学者，哲学者，錬金術師。アラビア名 Abū-Bakr Muhạmmad ibn Zakariyā al-Rāzī。ラテン名ラーゼス Rhazes。言語学，数学，哲学，音楽を学び，30歳で医学を志した。バグダード病院院長となり宮廷医を兼ねた。医学の学説，臨床ともガレノスに従い，「食事でなおせれば薬を用いるな。単純薬で有効なら複合薬は用いるな」と説いている。主著『医学総覧』 al-Ḥāwīには，ギリシア，シリア，アラビア，インドの医学知識が網羅されており，ラージー自身の臨床経験も述べられている。『天然痘とはしかに関する考察』 Kitāb fi-l-judarī wa al-ḥaṣbahでは，この二つの病気をはっきり区別している。
