A small marine animal belonging to the phylum Platyhelminthes, class Turbellaria, order Polycladida, family Stylofilamentidae. It is found on the coasts of Japan and lives under stones near the low and high tide lines. It usually crawls on the surface of stones, but can also swim. It is oval and flat, about 5 cm long and 3 cm wide. It has a pair of antennae near the front edge. The dorsal surface of the body is yellowish brown with grayish purple spots evenly distributed, and there are many black eyespots less than 1 mm in size at the base and along the front edge of the antennae. The ventral surface is light in color, with a mouth in the center, and the intestines can be seen branching out finely throughout the body from the mouth. Both this species and a similar species found in North America are said to be damaging to cultivated oysters.
