What is the disease?

citrus ( Citrus ) This condition occurs when excessive intake of carotene (a precursor of vitamin A), which is found in foods such as green tea, causes the pigment to be deposited in the skin, turning it yellow.

Carotene is Lipid soluble ( Use ) Therefore, if you have hyperlipidemia, your blood carotene levels are more likely to rise. If your liver is not able to convert carotene to vitamin A properly, your blood carotene levels will also rise and be more likely to be deposited in your skin.

How symptoms manifest

The color of the fingers, palms, soles, and wings of the nose will turn yellow. Carotene is easily deposited in the stratum corneum, epidermis, and subcutaneous sebum tissue of the skin, and the palms and soles of the feet, which have a thick stratum corneum, will turn yellow in particular. If the symptoms are severe, the whole body will turn yellow.

Examination and treatment methods

No special testing is required.

Without any special treatment, skin tone will return to normal if you reduce your carotene intake.

What to do if you notice an illness

It is important to eliminate or reduce your intake of foods high in carotene, such as citrus fruits, carrots, pumpkin, apricots, parsley, mangoes, and corn. In many cases, simply reducing your intake of citrus fruits will suffice.

You usually don't need to see a doctor, but jaundice ( Royal ) However, it can cause the skin to turn yellow, so be careful. If you develop jaundice, it may be a sign of liver dysfunction and you should see a doctor.

Carotenoid dermatitis can be distinguished from jaundice because it does not cause the yellowing of the conjunctiva (the white of the eye) that is seen in jaundice.

どんな病気か

　柑橘類(かんきつるい)などに多く含まれるカロテン（ビタミンAの前駆物質）の過剰摂取により、皮膚にこの色素が沈着して黄色くなる状態です。

　カロテンは脂溶性(しようせい)なので、高脂血症があると血中カロテン値が上昇しやすくなります。肝臓でカロテンからビタミンAへの転換がうまく行われない場合も、血中カロテン値が上昇して皮膚に沈着しやすくなります。

症状の現れ方

　手指や手のひら、足の裏、鼻翼などの色調が黄色調となります。カロテンは皮膚の角質層や表皮、皮下脂紡織に沈着しやすく、厚い角質層のある手のひら、足の裏がとくに黄色くなります。症状が強いと全身の色調が黄色くなります。

検査・治療の方法

　特別な検査は必要ありません。

　特別な治療を行わなくても、カロテンの摂取量を減らすと皮膚の色調は正常にもどります。

病気に気づいたらどうする

　柑橘類、ニンジン、カボチャ、アンズ、パセリ、マンゴー、とうもろこしなど、カロテンを多く含む食品の摂取を中止あるいは減量することが大切です。多くの場合は、柑橘類の摂取を減らすだけでよくなります。

　通常は医師の診察を受ける必要はありませんが、黄疸(おうだん)でも皮膚の色調は黄色くなるので注意が必要です。黄疸があれば肝機能障害が疑われるので、医師の診察を受けます。

　柑皮症では、黄疸でみられる眼球結膜（白眼の部分）の黄変はないので、区別することができます。
