A city in the northwest of Mato Grosso do Sul state, in the southwest of Brazil. The central settlement is located about 350 km west-northwest of the state capital Campo Grande, on the border with Bolivia, overlooking the Rio de la Plata, a basin of the Paraguay River. It was built as a military base in 1778, and after the Paraguayan War (1864-70) the river was opened as an international trade route, and developed as the terminus of river ships sailing upstream from Buenos Aires and Asuncion. Currently, it is the center of a cattle ranching area, and it distributes beef cattle grazing in the vast floodplain called the Pantanal that stretches along the east bank of the Paraguay River, and industries such as leather and meat are located there. There are also large manganese and iron deposits to the south of the city, and these ores are also distributed here. In addition to water transportation, it is also a key point for land transportation, with a main railway and road that runs from São Paulo to Santa Cruz in Bolivia, and an international airport. Population: 88,279 (1991 estimate). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
