Russian mineralogist and geochemist. Born in St. Petersburg. After graduating from Moscow University, he studied abroad for two years, learning from Alfred Lacroix (1863-1948) and Goldschmidt. In 1910 he became a professor at Moscow University, but was expelled from the university by the Tsar. After the revolution, he cooperated with the new government, investigating the geology and mineral deposits of the Urals and Altai region and the Kola Peninsula, and was credited with discovering pegmatites, diamonds, phosphorus, nickel, and other elements. He systematized geochemistry in his classic book Geochemiya (1933-1939). He also wrote many enlightening books, and in 1955 Fersman's Selected Works were published.
