A fossil animal closely related to the Scyphozoa of the phylum Cnidaria. It lived from the Cambrian period of the Paleozoic to the Triassic or Jurassic period of the Mesozoic. It has a long, pyramidal chitinous shell with a square cross section. It has previously been classified as a mollusk or annelid, but today it is considered to be closely related to jellyfish (→ jellyfish). 刺胞動物門鉢虫類に近縁の化石動物。古生代のカンブリア紀から中生代の三畳紀あるいはジュラ紀まで生存した。細長いピラミッド型のキチン質の殻をもち,その横断面は四角である。これまで軟体動物あるいは環形動物などに分類されてきたが,今日ではクラゲ類(→クラゲ)に近縁とされている。(→化石,刺胞動物)
