A sweet, thick, rich drink made from a puree made by crushing or straining fruit, boiling it down, and concentrating it, then adding fruit juice and sweeteners. ◇When it was first introduced to Japan, it was a registered trademark used by the Japan Fruit Juice Association and several major manufacturers, and there were voluntary regulations for its use, such as the amount of fruit pulp content, but after changes to the Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS), there are no longer any official domestic regulations regarding the word. However, internationally, there is a standard for "fruit nectar" in the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), which is not binding on each country, but products in Japan generally meet this standard. ◇From the name of a drink in Greek mythology that the gods drank and that is said to grant immortality to those who drink it.
