A method of measuring the distance between two points by utilizing the high directivity of lasers. A laser is sent back and forth between two points, and the distance between the two points is calculated from the time it takes for the laser to go back and forth. Different types of lasers and devices are used depending on the distance and environment. In addition to civil engineering surveying such as tunnel and railway bridge construction, this method is also used to measure things like the altitude of an airplane and the distance to the moon.
