Tokan Clan - Yamato's Peril

A powerful clan of immigrant origins on a par with the Hata clan. Their surname was Atae at first. Eastern Han is a title in contrast to Western Han, but they are not the same clan. It is said that in the 20th year of Emperor Ojin's reign, Achi no Omi, a descendant of Emperor Ling of the Later Han, led a party of 17 prefectures to Japan. Based in the Hinokuma region on the southern edge of the Yamato Basin, they incorporated a group of engineers who had recently immigrated from the continent under the control of the main family. Later, they branched out into many clans, and were involved in the finances, diplomacy, and writing of the imperial court, making a great contribution to the development of culture and technology. They changed their surname to Imiki under the eight-class surname system. After the 8th century, the Sakanoue clan became dominant and established their position as the main family. 秦(はた)氏と並ぶ渡来系の有力大氏族。姓(かばね)は初め直(あたえ)。東漢は西漢(かわちのあや)に対する称であるが，同族ではない。応神天皇20年に後漢霊帝の裔という阿知使主(あちのおみ)が17県の党類を率いて渡来したと伝える。大和盆地南辺檜前(ひのくま)地方を拠点とし，新たに大陸から渡来した技術者集団を本宗家の支配下に編入。のち多くの氏に分化，朝廷の財務・外交・文筆などに携わり，文化・技術の発展に大きく寄与した。八色(やくさ)の姓制で忌寸(いみき)に改姓。８世紀以降坂上(さかのうえ)氏が優勢となって本宗家の地位を確立。征夷大将軍・坂上田村麻呂が著名。→渡来人／漢氏
