European music was introduced as church music in the 1550s, when Gregorian chants were sung at Christmas masses. Seminarians placed great importance on music, and instruments such as violas and harps were used in ensembles.

…The Meiji Restoration opened the door to trade with Europe and America, and Western music and Qing music (also called Minshingaku, which absorbed the previous Ming music) were imported. Western music was introduced to Japan as Christian music at the end of the Muromachi period, and Japanese people also studied it, but Japan soon became isolated and it stopped being practiced at all. After that, during the Keio period (1865-68), the Satsuma Domain was the first to study military music, and in 1879, the Ministry of Education established a music investigation office, and research on music in elementary education was conducted with the assistance of American music educator LW Mason. …
