Yoshimasa Nagoshi

Japanese:
Yoshimasa Nagoshi

A kettle maker from the Momoyama period. The son of Jyoyu, he is said to be the 11th head of the Nagoshi family. He was commonly known as Yashichiro. He lived in the Kyoto Sanjo Kamanza, and was known as a master craftsman of Kyoto kettles along with Nishimura Dounin, who was also at the kettle maker. He was given the title of "Tenkaichi" (best in the world), and later became a kettle maker for Tokugawa Ieyasu. According to the family genealogy, the first Nagoshi Shichirozaemon was the second son of Hojo Yoshitoki, but this is not very reliable. Zensho built the foundation for the family to be famous for tea ceremony kettles, and his eldest son Sansho became the first head of the Kyoto Nagoshi family, while his second son Iemasa went down to Edo and established the Edo Nagoshi family. Sansho is particularly known for his work as a master carpenter in the casting of the large temple bell of Hokoji Temple, and Iemasa became the kettle maker for the Tokugawa Shogunate, which prospered through successive generations. There are few surviving works by Zensho, but in Nishimura Doya's book "Meibutsu Kama-Ozai Nayose" (Famous Kama Possessions), he includes "Sarugama," a collaboration with Nishimura Michihito, as well as "Yoho Tsutsukama," "Tsunebari Kama," and "Shiribari Kama."
