Awakening - Kakuun

A Tendai Buddhist monk in the mid-Heian period. He was from Kyoto and the son of Fujiwara Sadamasa. He studied under Jiedaishi Ryogen and lived in the Dannain temple at the Toto Pagoda of Mt. Hiei, where he lectured on the teachings. He is highly regarded alongside Genshin of the Saito Eshinin temple, and the two schools of teaching that they shared, the Danna school and the Eshin school, became the two major schools of Tendai Buddhism. He also studied esoteric Buddhism under Tani Ajari Kokei, who was not yet 30 years old, and received the Himitsukanjo (secret initiation). In December 1003 (Choho 5), he was appointed Shosozu by imperial edict of Emperor Ichijo as the head priest of the Ninoue ceremony at the Daigokuden. After that, he was often summoned to the Imperial Court to preach at Buddhist ceremonies, and was appointed Sojo by imperial edict. He passed away on November 1, 4th year of the Kanko era (some say October 30). He was known as Danna Sozu (Sojo). His works include "Gengisho", "Endon Kaikanmon", "Soumoku Hoshin Shugyo Jobutsugi", "Shishu Samadhi Private Records", and "Sankangi Private Records".

平安中期の天台宗の僧。京都の人で、藤原貞雅(ふじわらのさだまさ)の子。慈慧大師(じえだいし)良源に学び、叡山(えいざん)東塔の檀那院(だんないん)に住して教学を講説した。西塔慧心院(えしんいん)の源信(げんしん)と並び称され、両者の法系である檀那流と慧心流の両流は、天台宗学の二大流派となった。また、30歳に満たない谷阿闍利皇慶(たにあじゃりこうけい)に密教を学び、秘密灌頂(ひみつかんじょう)を受ける。1003年（長保5）12月、一条(いちじょう)天皇の詔(みことのり)により大極殿(だいごくでん)仁王会(にんのうえ)の総導師を管し、少僧都(しょうそうず)に任ぜられた。その後しばしば宮中に召されて法要を説き、詔によって僧正(そうじょう)に任ぜられた。寛弘(かんこう)4年11月1日（一説に10月30日）示寂。世に檀那僧都（僧正）と称された。『玄義鈔(げんぎしょう)』『円頓戒勘文(えんどんかいかんもん)』『草木発心修行成仏義(そうもくほっしんしゅぎょうじょうぶつぎ)』『四種三昧(ししゅさんまい)私記』『三観義(さんかんぎ)私記』などの著作がある。
