Born: November 16, 1901, Nove Mesto
[Died] September 20, 1985. Born in Czechoslovakia, New York. American philosopher. Professor at Columbia University. He studied under M. Cohen, J. Dewey, F. Woodbridge, and was influenced by C. Peirce, B. Russell, and G. Santayana. He belonged to the naturalistic logical empiricism movement and contributed to the philosophy of science. He also had a deep knowledge of symbolic logic. He was an editor of the Journal of Symbolic Logic and the Journal of Philosophy. His main works include "The Logic of Measurement" (1930), "An Introduction to Logic and Scientific Method" (34), "Principles of the Theory of the Probability" (39), "Sovereign Reason" (54), "Logic without Metaphysics" (56), and "The Structure of Science" (61).
