Junior college (English spelling)

Japanese: ジュニア･カレッジ（英語表記）junior college

A two-year institution of higher education in the United States. It became a model for one of the junior colleges in postwar Japan. It appeared in the early 20th century and developed rapidly in the 1920s. This coincided with the time when youth problems became a social issue. After the spread of secondary education in the United States, it became a place to accept the increasing number of unemployed young people after high school graduation, and young people from rural areas who were unable to go on to higher education because there were no higher schools in their area. It provided specialized and liberal arts education in a shortened form, making higher education more accessible to the masses and giving young people an opportunity to extend their moratorium.

アメリカの2年制高等教育機関。戦後日本の短期大学の一つのモデルとなった。20世紀初頭に出現，1920年代に急速に発展する。これは青年期問題が社会問題化した時期とも重なる。アメリカにおける中等教育の普及ののち，増加したハイ･スクール卒業後の失業青年，地元に上級学校がなく進学先に恵まれない地方の青年たちを受けいれる場となり，専門と教養に関する教育を短縮した形で与え，高等教育を大衆に近づきやすくするとともに青年にモラトリアム延長の機会を与えた。
