Pike Theatre

… The Gate Theatre, built in 1928 by Michael McLiamor and others, has staged classics from outside Ireland, past and present, as well as Denis Johnston, a playwright who used expressionist dramaturgy in plays such as The Old Lady Says No (premiered in 1929) and Moon on the Yellow River (premiered in 1931). The Pike Theatre, which opened in the 1950s, made a name for itself by presenting the Irish premiere of Beckett's Waiting for Godot in the same year (1955) as the London premiere, under the direction of the up-and-coming director Alan Simpson. Brendan Behan's The Condemned (premiered in 1954) and The Hostage, which the same author first wrote in Gaelic in 1958 and later rewrote into English, and became internationally famous, also premiered here. …
