[Died] August 19, 1929. Venice, Italy. Russian ballet producer and head of the Ballets Russes. He launched a groundbreaking artistic movement in the early 20th century and brought about a modern revival of ballet. Born into an aristocratic family, he initially studied law in St. Petersburg. He later switched to music and graduated from the music school there in 1892. He published the art magazine Mir Iskusstva (1898-1904). From 1899 to 1901, he served as assistant director of the Mariinsky Theatre Ballet Company. In 1908, he performed Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky's opera Boris Godunov at the Paris Opera using Russian musicians such as Fyodor Ivanovich Chaliapin. After that, he specialized in ballet and in 1909 founded the Ballets Russes in Paris. He employed cutting-edge artists from various fields such as music, art, and dance, including Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky, and fused them into a comprehensive art form, presenting ambitious works such as Scheherazade (1910), Afternoon of a Faun (1912), The Rite of Spring (1913), The Firebird (1916), and The Three-Cornered Hat (1919) in succession in London, Monte Carlo, Paris, and New York. Highly educated, with excellent leadership skills and outstanding showmanship, he was always at the forefront of new artistic movements and dominated the world of ballet for 20 years. Ballets Russes was dissolved with the death of Diaghilev in 1929.

ロシアのバレエ・プロデューサー,バレエ・リュスの主宰者。20世紀初頭に画期的な芸術運動を展開,バレエの近代的復興をなしとげた。貴族の子として生まれ,初めサンクトペテルブルグで法学を勉強。のち音楽に転じて 1892年同地の音楽学校を卒業。美術雑誌『芸術世界』Mir Iskusstva(1898~1904)を発行。1899~1901年マリインスキー劇場バレエ団の監督助手を務める。1908年パリのオペラ座でフョードル・イワノビッチ・シャリアピンらロシア人音楽家を用いてモデスト・ペトロビッチ・ムソルグスキーのオペラ『ボリス・ゴドゥノフ』を公演。以後はバレエを専門に手がけ,1909年バレエ・リュスをパリで結成。イーゴリ・フョードロビッチ・ストラビンスキーら音楽,美術,舞踊など各界の尖鋭な芸術家を起用,総合芸術として融合させ,『シェエラザード』(1910),『牧神の午後』(1912),『春の祭典』(1913),『火の鳥』(1916),『三角帽子』(1919)などの野心作をロンドン,モンテカルロ,パリ,ニューヨークなどで次々に発表。高い教養と優れた統率力,抜群の興行センスをもち,常に新しい芸術運動の先頭に立って,世界のバレエ界を 20年にわたって制覇した。バレエ・リュスは 1929年ディアギレフの死とともに解散。
