A genus of green, filamentous, tubular algae that grows abundantly in paddy fields and ditches; it branches irregularly and forms a mat-like structure. The body is polynuclear, consisting of a single cell without a septum. Sexual reproduction is by the union of eggs and sperm produced in the oophores and antheridium on the sides of the body. Asexual reproduction is by zoospores produced at the tips of the filaments. The zoospores are large, aggregated zoospores that are spherical or elliptical, have many equal-length flagella, and are up to 100 μm in diameter. Fusarium was previously classified as a green algae, but many scholars now classify it as a member of the Xanthophyceae class because of its characteristics of not having chlorophyll b as a photosynthetic pigment, its storage material being oil rather than starch, and the fact that the sperm have two flagella on the sides, the one that extends forward, has a pinnate structure.
