The transfer of a fertilized egg into a surrogate mother. In the field of livestock, it is synonymous with embryo transfer. The early stage when a fertilized egg begins cleavage (cell division) is called an embryo. A capable female, such as a cow, is given hormone treatment to induce superovulation, and a large number of fertilized eggs are obtained through artificial insemination. These are then transferred to the female surrogate mother to obtain offspring. A similar technique is in vitro fertilization, in which unfertilized eggs are removed from the ovaries of a capable female, matured in a test tube, fertilized with sperm, and transferred to a surrogate mother. Using these techniques, a large number of offspring can be obtained from a single mother.
