...Udon is an abbreviation of the Sanskrit word udumbara, transliterated as udumbara or udumbachi. Udumbara, whose scientific name is Ficus glomerata Roxb., is a type of fig plant belonging to the mulberry family, but its flowers are in a concave stalk and cannot be seen from the outside. For this reason, in Indian legends, it is said to bloom only once every 3,000 years, or only when Tathagata or the Chakravartin appear.
